Hundreds of tenants and housing advocates swarmed City Hall on Tuesday to support a proposed bill that would require Airbnb to turn over user data, including host addresses. Activists like Christopher Lebron blamed Airbnb and other short-term apartment rental sites for ruining the fabric of many neighborhoods.
Mayor de Blasio’s Office of Special Enforcement wants the bill to help enforce a state law against advertising of short-term rentals of apartments in multiple-dwelling buildings. Proponents of the bill claim that about half of Airbnb’s 40,000 active listings in New York defy that law.
